Childhood obesity in America has a new adversary – the White House. Led by First Lady Michelle Obama the “Let’s Move” initiative has created a presidential task force comprised of a number of government agencies including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Interior, Education, the Office of Management and Budget and the White House. The task force will primarily focus their efforts on 4 major issues related to childhood obesity: 1) ensuring access to healthy, affordable food; 2) increasing physical activity in schools and communities; 3) providing healthier food in schools; and 4) empowering parents with information and tools to make good choices for themselves and their families. “We know that solving our obesity challenge won’t be easy and it won’t be quick, but make no mistake about it – this problem can be solved,” said Mrs. Obama. “This isn’t like putting a man on the moon or inventing the internet. It doesn’t take a stroke of genius or a feat of technology. We have everything we need right now to help our kids lead healthy lives.” The “Let’s Move” initiative will look to involve federal, state, and local governments, non-profit and for-profit enterprises and the entire health and fitness community. The International Health, Racquet, and Sports club Association (IHRSA) is working with the Obama Administration to educate them about how health clubs and fitness professionals can fit into this program.
